REALLY HAPPY

The Show

Emojis (formerly emoticons) have existed for decades. With the birth of the smartphone in the late 2000s, their use has grown exponentially. Emojis can even be considered the fastest-growing language in the world. With that said, we all use emojis so much that we have experienced a breakdown in our own spoken language, it is easier to express ourselves over text than it is in person. Emojis have become a cop-out for expressing our true feelings and emotions to the outside world.

REALLY HAPPY is an exploration of the breakdown in communication that emojis have caused. Such as the way emojis have “taken over” our lives, I have taken the idea of their invasion and placed them on as many different mediums and surfaces as possible. Not only are the emojis placed on an array of mediums, but they are also further abstracted and distorted to completely change the definition and emotion they represent.

REALLY HAPPY is not only an art exhibition, but its own brand and entity, it encompasses fine and commercial art. It is more than just a show, it questions how far emojis can be taken until they completely take over our communication.
